Group Clinics
What are Group Clinics?
Group clinics (sometimes called shared medical appointments) are a modern way for GP surgeries to support patients with similar health conditions together, rather than through traditional one-to-one appointments. They combine medical care, education, and peer support in a structured group setting led by a clinician and an administrator, in a confidential setting.
These sessions will provide expert advice, guidance, and the opportunity to learn from others’ experiences. Patients will still receive personalised care, while also benefiting from increased appointment time and peer support.
Our Next Group Clinic
Our next Group Clinic will be Friday 15th May at 17.30pm at our Bentley. The topic this month will be Menopause.
Common Group Clinic Queries
What Are Group Clinics?
Group clinics (also known as shared medical appointments) are a different way of running appointments at your GP surgery. Instead of seeing patients one at a time, a small group of people with similar health conditions are invited to attend a session together.
These clinics are led by a GP, nurse, or other healthcare professional and are designed to give you more time, more support, and more opportunity to understand and manage your health.
How Does a Group Clinic Work?
You will be invited to attend a scheduled appointment at either our Bentley or Sprotbrough site, alongside a small group of other patients from the practice who have similar health needs.
During the session:
- A clinician will talk through general information that is helpful for everyone in the group
- You will still have the opportunity to discuss your own health, ask questions, and receive personalised advice
- Part of the clinic may take place as a group discussion, with the option for brief one-to-one time if needed
Group clinics are designed to give you more time, more information, and a supportive environment to better understand and manage your health.
Clinics We Currently Offer
We are running a range of group clinics to support patients with common long-term conditions and health concerns such as:
- Menopause
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Diabetes
- Asthma
Please email at syicb-doncaster.dvh@nhs.net to express interest in attending any of these group clinics as the sessions are invitation only.
Why Are Group Clinics Offered?
Group clinics offer a different and often more supportive way of receiving care. They are designed to benefit patients by:
- Learning from others who have similar experiences
- Providing more time for discussion and questions than a standard appointment
- Helping you feel less alone in managing your condition
- Allowing the practice to support more patients in an effective and timely way
Many patients find that hearing from others and sharing experiences helps build confidence and understanding.
Is It Confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is essential in group clinics.
At the beginning of each session, everyone will be asked to respect each other’s privacy and to keep anything shared within the group confidential. This helps create a safe and supportive environment for everyone attending.
Do I Have to Join a Group Clinic?
No, group clinics are completely optional.
If you would prefer a traditional one-to-one appointment, you can request this as normal and a clinician will be happy to support you in that way.
